After the End by Clare Mackintosh
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Thank you PenguinRandom House Canada for my free review copy. This book was amazing, heartbreaking, and wonderful. I have waited a few days to write my review to let my thoughts settle. This book definitely makes you think! What would happen if this was me?
Pip and Max have a strong happy marriage. Their young son has a brain tumour that couldn’t be completely removed during surgery. As we meet Pip and Will they are spending their days in the pediatric ICU waiting for their son to be strong enough to come off the ventilator. Once this happens they are hopeful they can all go home and care for their son there. Sadly they are told dire news about the condition of Dylan. They have a major decision to make about his care going forward. Pip and Max who have always been so in sync with each other hit a crossroad when they can’t agree on Dylan’s care. Due to the seriousness of the situation their case goes to court where the final decision with be made.
I found the first half of the book stronger than the last half but still enjoyed them both. At times this book was absolutely gut wrenching. The second half of the book goes back and forth between Max’s version of the story and Pip’s version after the court decision is made.
This story is even more poignant because the author and her husband had a difficult medical decision to make twelve years ago.
This book definitely brings up a lot of issues and emotions as you evaluate both sides of the story.
